How to Incorporate Vintage Pieces into Modern Décor: A Blend of the Old and New

Mackenzie Paige • Oct 01, 2023

Finding the Right Design Balance Between Vintage and Contemporary

We often find ourselves drawn to the new and the old in equal measure. That is especially true when it comes to home interiors. Mixing vintage and contemporary pieces can lend a room character without overwhelming it. However, doing it well requires some thought. In this guide, we consider some of the factors to consider to ensure that each of the styles complements the other.

Start with One or Two Key Items

One strong vintage item can set the tone for the room, whether it's a unique coffee table or a vintage rug. But don't go overboard; otherwise, the room might feel like a museum exhibit rather than a living space.

Think About Materials

The difference in materials between vintage and modern items can make a room interesting. A vintage wooden desk can contrast well with a modern glass table lamp, for example.

Consider Colours

A well-chosen colour scheme can unify the different elements. Neutrals often work well as a base, with occasional splashes of bolder hues or patterns coming from either your modern or vintage pieces.

Update Vintage Items If Needed

Sometimes an old piece needs a bit of a tweak to fit into a modern space. For example, an old lamp might need rewiring or a new shade to make it more functional.

Personal Touches

The great thing about vintage pieces is that they usually have a story to tell. Regardless of whether it was just something you picked up at an emporium or a precious family heirloom, that item adds a layer of personality to your room that a brand-new piece might not offer.

Use Vintage as Accents

If you are not keen on making vintage the main focus, consider using these pieces as accents. An old vase on a contemporary dining table or an antique frame around a modern art piece can add just a touch of vintage without overwhelming the space.

In Summary

The trick to mixing vintage and modern décor is less about enthusiasm and more about restraint. A well-considered approach can add depth and interest to a room, without making it feel like a cluttered mix of the old and new.

The Interior Design Challenge: The main challenge with this space was planning all the storage requirements whilst also fitting in three desk areas. As a busy home office space for a local company who specialise in loft conversions, it was important this space was aesthetically pleasing, practical but also representative of their brand. My Interior Design Approach: When adding carpentry to a space, it is important to really consider how it will be used and the specific measurements too. I initially worked to create ergonomic desks stations, and them moved on to the design finishes.
